James Meredith’s Letter to the Justice Department February 7, 1961James Meredith’s letter to the Department of Justice concerning his attempts to gain admission to the University of Mississippi. Meredith would ultimately become the first African American student at the University in the fall of 1962, a turning point in the civil rights movement.
